Pit Less / Surface Mounted Truck Weighbridge
A Pit Less Weighbridge, also known as a Surface Mounted Weighbridge or Truck Scale, is installed completely above the surrounding ground or road level. Unlike a pit-type weighbridge, the weighing platform does not require a full-depth pit below the deck.
Since the weighing platform is elevated above ground level, RCC approach ramps are provided at both ends of the weighbridge to allow trucks and other heavy vehicles to smoothly enter and exit the weighing platform.
Ideal for Simple & Cost-Effective Installation
Pit Less Weighbridges are particularly suitable for locations where deep excavation is difficult, expensive, or undesirable. As the structure is installed above ground level, the civil foundation is generally simpler compared with a conventional pit-type installation.
Vehicles normally approach and leave the weighbridge from the two ends where the ramps are provided. Therefore, a Pit Less Weighbridge requires more overall installation space than a Pit Type Weighbridge.
RCC Approach Ramps
Properly designed RCC approach and exit ramps are essential for safe and smooth vehicle movement.
For our standard Pit Less Weighbridge installations, we generally recommend RCC ramps of at least 3 metres on both sides, subject to the platform height, vehicle type, site conditions, available space and civil design.
A gradual and properly constructed ramp helps:
Provide smooth entry and exit of heavy vehicles
Reduce sudden impact and shock loading on the weighbridge
Minimise unnecessary stress on the platform and load cells
Improve vehicle alignment
Contribute to better long-term performance of the weighing system
For higher platform/deck heights, a longer approach ramp may be required to maintain a suitable gradient.
Better Accessibility & Drainage
One of the major advantages of a Pit Less Weighbridge is that the complete weighing structure remains above ground level.
Unlike a deep-pit installation, there is no large enclosed pit underneath the platform where rainwater, mud and debris can easily collect. With proper site grading and drainage arrangements, rainwater can be directed away from the load-cell foundation and weighing structure.
This makes Pit Less Weighbridges particularly suitable for locations where heavy rainfall, water accumulation or difficult drainage conditions are important considerations.
The above-ground construction also provides easier access to the load cells, mounting assemblies, cables and other components for inspection, cleaning and maintenance.
Suitable for Relocation & Temporary Installations
Pit Less Weighbridges are also a practical choice where the weighing system may need to be relocated in the future.

Since a full-depth pit is not required, dismantling the steel platform and reinstalling it at another suitable location can be comparatively easier. A new foundation and ramp arrangement must, however, be constructed according to the required civil and installation specifications.
Heavy-Duty Steel Weighbridge Platform
During weighing, the complete vehicle load is transferred through the steel weighbridge platform to the load cells and foundation.
In addition to the static weight of the truck, the structure is subjected to dynamic forces, vibration, braking forces and repeated loading caused by heavy vehicle movement.
Therefore, proper platform design is extremely important for long-term reliability.
Our weighbridge platforms are engineered using carefully selected structural steel sections, girders and plates to provide the required strength, rigidity and durability for heavy-duty truck weighing applications.
Structural steel materials are selected according to the applicable specifications and quality requirements, including IS 2062 grade material wherever specified/applicable.
Guide Rails for Safer Vehicle Movement
Pit Less Weighbridges are generally provided with side guide rails along the weighing platform.
These guide rails assist drivers in keeping the vehicle properly aligned and centred while entering, weighing and exiting the platform.
Correct vehicle alignment also helps reduce the possibility of accidental side movement and unnecessary impact on the weighbridge structure.
Space Requirement
A Pit Less Weighbridge requires more installation space than a Pit Type Weighbridge because of the elevated platform and approach ramps.
Before selecting the weighbridge, the following should therefore be considered:
Platform Length + Approach Ramp + Exit Ramp + Vehicle Turning & Manoeuvring Space
The height of the weighbridge deck is also important. A higher deck generally requires longer ramps to provide a comfortable and safe gradient for loaded vehicles.
Therefore, the complete site layout should be evaluated before finalising the weighbridge size and installation.

Civil foundation and ramp dimensions should therefore be finalised according to the weighbridge capacity, platform size, deck height, soil condition, expected vehicle loading and actual site conditions.

Many conventional truck weighbridge systems are designed using Analog Cup & Ball Type Load Cells connected through an analog junction/summing system to a regular weighing indicator or terminal. Instead of relying solely on low-level analog load-cell signals throughout the weighing system, digital load cells communicate digitally with the compatible terminal. Digital Compression Type Load Cells
The load cells are among the most important components of any electronic truck weighbridge because they convert the mechanical load applied by the vehicle into measurable electrical information.
Our preferred system uses Digital Compression Type Weighbridge Load Cells suitable for heavy-duty truck weighing applications. The digital architecture allows individual load cells to communicate with the compatible weighing terminal, providing greater visibility into the performance of the weighing system.
Depending upon the platform size, capacity and structural design, a truck weighbridge may be configured with 4, 6, 8, 10 or more load cells. The correct quantity and rated capacity of load cells are selected according to the actual weighbridge design, axle loading and application requirements.
Individual Load Cell Monitoring & Easier Diagnostics
One of the important advantages of a compatible digital weighbridge system is its ability to provide information relating to individual digital load cells.
For example, in an 8-load-cell weighbridge, the system can work with the individual load-cell channels rather than treating the entire weighbridge only as one combined analog signal. If an abnormal condition develops, diagnostic information can help the technician identify the affected load cell, communication channel, cable or related component more efficiently.
In a conventional analog system, troubleshooting may require systematic testing of the load cells, analog junction box, cables, connections and indicator. Digital diagnostics can reduce this trial-and-error process and help service engineers locate certain problems more quickly.

Instead of using only a basic conventional weighing indicator, our advanced digital weighbridge configuration uses the RUIT Digital Weighbridge Intelligent Terminal (IT) as the central control and monitoring unit of the weighing system.
Depending upon the selected RUIT model and configuration, the intelligent terminal can provide advanced weighing functions, digital load-cell communication, individual load-cell monitoring, diagnostic information, transaction management, data handling and integration with other weighbridge equipment.
The objective is to make the terminal much more than a simple device that displays the total truck weight. It becomes an important part of the complete digital weighbridge management system.
Up to 4 CCTV Camera Integration – No Separate PC Required*
For applications requiring better monitoring and control of truck weighing transactions, applicable RUIT configurations can support integration of up to 4 CCTV cameras without requiring a separate PC.
Cameras can be positioned to monitor different areas such as the front of the vehicle, rear of the vehicle, weighbridge platform and vehicle/number-plate area. This provides additional visual monitoring of the weighing process and can help industries improve operational transparency and transaction control.
This feature is especially useful for industries handling high-value materials or a large number of daily vehicle transactions.
*CCTV and other advanced functions depend upon the selected RUIT model, accessories and final system configuration.
Advanced Digital Architecture
Conventional analog load cells normally generate very small electrical signals that are transmitted through cables and combined through an analog junction/summing arrangement before reaching the weighing indicator.
In our compatible digital configuration, the load-cell measurement is processed and communicated digitally within the system. This reduces dependence on transmitting only very low-level analog signals over the complete signal path and provides additional opportunities for system diagnostics and individual load-cell monitoring.
Digital technology does not mean that cables, connectors or electronics can never develop faults. Proper installation, electrical protection, earthing and preventive inspection remain important. The advantage is that a digital architecture can provide technicians with better information for diagnosis and maintenance.
Digital Corner Adjustment & System Configuration
Correct corner performance is essential for an accurate truck weighbridge. The indicated weight should remain within permissible tolerances when the load position changes across the usable weighing platform.
Conventional analog weighbridges commonly use analog junction-box adjustment or related calibration procedures. In a compatible digital system, individual load-cell information and correction parameters can be handled through the digital electronics, making commissioning, corner correction and servicing more systematic.

Proper Installation Is Equally Important
Even the best digital load cell cannot provide optimum performance if the civil foundation, mechanical structure or electrical installation is incorrect.
For reliable long-term operation, proper attention should therefore be given to RCC foundation design, load-cell mounting, platform alignment, mechanical clearances, drainage, cable protection, earthing, lightning/surge protection and periodic inspection.
A digital weighbridge is a precision industrial measuring system and should also undergo accuracy verification, calibration and Legal Metrology procedures as applicable.
